This woman may be Deborah Leeds. Her husband listed 12 children in his will. That meshes with the story that the 13th child was the devil. Many people say it’s all just a made up tale. The creature supposedly fled to the Pine Barrens, where many fugitives ran. They gathered in groups called pineys. They turned to highway robbery as the pine robbers. So stories formed about monsters. Especially since the reputation of the bandits was less than wholesome.
